Give the counter the year, make and model of the vehicle, and if it's a body panel, the paint code, since matching the color means you're not paying a body shop to repaint it afterward. Ask for the part to be pulled ahead and it will be off the rack and waiting when you pull in.

New parts have their place too, especially on wear items where used isn't the better buy. Ask the counter for both the new price and the used price on the same call, and pick whichever fits the job and the budget you're working with.
